METRANS equips Rail Vehicles with ETCS Baseline 3
A recent CINEA site visit took place to mark the final phase of the CEF supported project through which METRANS advanced the deployment of ETCS Baseline 3 across its fleet. The visit provided the opportunity to present the results delivered at the end of the project, which reflect METRANS’ long-term commitment to investing in modern, interoperable and sustainable rail technology.
Starting end of 2022, 20 new Vectron locomotives have been equipped with ETCS Baseline 3 and deployed into METRANS operations. By integrating the latest European signaling standard into its active fleet, METRANS strengthens seamless cross border interoperability and enhances operational safety across the TEN-T network.
Second part of the supported project was focused on the development and validation of a prototype retrofit solution upgrading an already operating locomotive to ETCS Baseline 3. This prototype solution, which will be over the coming months installed in a series of already operating locomotives (also supported by CEF), enables that advanced European standards can be deployed not only in newly manufactured vehicles, but also through targeted retrofit upgrades of existing rolling stock.
The large-scale deployment of ERTMS/ETCS standards contributes to the rail modernization and interoperability commitments of EU Member States. Safer and more reliable international rail connections can benefit citizens and facilitate a broader shift of freight from road to intermodal rail freight transport with lower emissions.
