Intermodal in Świnoujście is gaining momentum
Intermodal transport in Świnoujście has become a fact: on December 8, we received the first train with semi-trailers at the Ferry Terminal in Świnoujście.
After successful tests in November, the carrier Freightliner PL has just started pilot trips from Silesia, through Świnoujście to Swedish ports, and then to Gothenburg and Stockholm.
Intermodal is a modern and sustainable form of transport. – By developing intermodal transport, we are implementing EU policy and reducing CO2 emissions by as much as 76% – explains Ryszard Kaczmarek, Director of Intermodal Market Development at Freightliner PL. Transport organised in this way is not only beneficial for the natural environment, but also brings many socio-economic benefits. By relieving road transport, we make transport less burdensome for other road users and residents of cities and smaller towns.
The customers themselves will also notice the advantages – thanks to the fact that their goods are enclosed in one intermodal semi-trailer from the beginning to the end of the route, they have full control over them through an integrated semi-trailer monitoring system.
The pilot is being conducted in preparation for the commencement of regular transport as early as early as 2025.
– This is a historic moment – emphasizes Rafał Zahorski, plenipotentiary for port development. – On December 8, we received the first intermodal train with semi-trailers at the Ferry Terminal in Świnoujście, thus joining the European and world elite developing intermodal – he adds.
We are doing this to relieve road traffic to and from the Ferry Terminal in Świnoujście as much as possible.
– Intermodal transport is gaining in importance every year – says Aneta Szreder-Piernicka, Commercial and Marketing Director. – No one in logistics needs to be justified in the need to strive to increase the share of rail in the transport of goods. We therefore focused our efforts on the development of intermodal transport based on the port infrastructure of the ferry terminal in Świnoujście – he explains.
The annual turnover of the terminal at the level of 0.5 million trucks provided a solid justification for this project.
