Multimodal transhipment hub to be constructed in Port of Szczecin
The Szczecin and Świnoujście Seaports Authority S.A. signed on 8 May of the current year a co-financing agreement for the project entitled Construction of a multimodal railway transhipment hub on the Ostrów Grabowski Peninsula in the Port of Szczecin – MULTIRAILHUB. The funding was obtained as a part of the CEF Transport competition: Adaptation of the TEN-T Network for dual civil and defence use. The total value of the project is 8.7 million euros, while the co-financing will amount to 4.3 million euros. The start of the project is scheduled for June 2024, while the project completion is planned for November 2026.
This is another project of the Szczecin and Śwnioujście Seaports Authority S.A. co-financed under the CEF II Instrument, which will contribute to the development of the TEN-T Network as well as to tightening cooperation of seaports within the Baltic – Adriatic and North Sea – Baltic transport corridors. The project will be implemented in the Port of Szczecin, which is a multimodal transport hub of the TEN-T Baltic – Adriatic Sea and North Sea – Baltic Sea corridors. The project will contribute to both the achievement of CEF transport and military mobility objectives and the development priorities of the TEN-T network.
The investment consists of two elements: construction of a railway transhipment station and reconstruction of the ro-ro ramp at the existing quay.
The first element of the project is the construction of a railway transhipment station with an area of approximately 11,000 square metres and a load capacity of 100 kilonewtons per square metre. The transhipment station will be built at the intersection with a four-track electrified railway siding. The new infrastructure will enable parallel reloading on two trains, each 750 metres long.
The second element of the project is the reconstruction of the existing ro-ro ramp by widening its width from 25 to 32 metres. Another element of the investment is the reconstruction of the quayside along with widening access to the ro-ro ramp, enabling safe entry and exit from the ramp. And the relocation of the mooring system. The modernised ro-ro ramp will enable the handling of large ro-ro ships up to 34 metres wide and 240 metres long and with a draft of up to 11 metres.
The future multimodal railway transhipment hub, together with infrastructure for civilian and military needs, will ensure the efficient reloading of intermodal units and military equipment to the railway. The project elements will be connected to the existing internal port railway system and internal port roads connected by the TEN-T core network.
The project will adapt the port infrastructure to handle both civilian and military deliveries, without causing bottlenecks in rail transport. The new infrastructure will enable sustainable and efficient rail transport of containers for EU customers and military supplies for NATO units in Poland and allied countries. The investment will increase the security of the EU borders and NATO’s eastern flank. Also, the project will improve the development of rail container transport towards Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova, which is consistent with the Solidarity Lanes concept.
The project will enhance the development of energy-saving and environmentally friendly container rail transport in the Baltic-Adriatic and North Sea-Baltic corridors. The investment is a project of common interest and generates high value for EU society, trade and economy, and supports military mobility. It meets the priorities of the TEN-T regulation such as coherence, efficiency, sustainable development and increased benefits for users.
The development of intermodal transhipment hubs in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship will be one of the topics of the INTERMODAL IN POLAND NORTH -SOUTH conference, which will take place on 19-20 September 2024 in Szczecin. The Szczecin and Świnoujście Seaports Authority is the Strategic Partner of the event.
