EUR 300 million investment planned for Kaunas region’s Juragiai International Intermodal Terminal and warehouses
The Juragiai Intermodal Terminal, set to be the largest and most modern in the Baltics, will be situated at the heart of Lithuania, specifically at the Rail Baltica and Via Baltica intersection in the Kaunas district. It will have the capacity to host up to 6 full, undivided trainsets simultaneously, bridging Scandinavia with Southern Europe. The project, with an investment surpassing €300 million, promises new jobs and increased freight traffic across Europe.
Within the next 5 years, the 72 Ha site is projected to house 200,000 sqm of warehouses and accommodate over 200,000 TEUs. This expansion heralds burgeoning opportunities for the growth of freight volumes via Lithuanian railways.
Unique Location:
The Juragiai Intermodal Terminal boasts an unparalleled logistics location. It’s proximate to the Rail Baltica (1435) and 1520 rail links, the under-construction Via Baltica A5 motorway connection, the Kaunas airport, and the Klaipeda Seaport just 200 km away. The terminal is also strategically positioned to integrate with seaports in Tallinn, Riga, and Klaipeda, enhancing intermodal freight transport in the region.
Contributions to the European Green Deal:
Aligning with EU’s climate goals, the Juragiai Intermodal Terminal is poised to make significant contributions to the European Green Deal. Services offered will align with the EU’s mission to slash CO2 emissions by 55% come 2030. Most cargo will transition to efficient rail transport, further decreasing Lithuania’s CO2 emissions.
Conditions for Development:
Kaunas District Municipality has paved the way for swift and favorable terminal development. The supportive stance of municipal leaders augments job creation, addressing local social challenges. Collaborative discussions between Rail Baltica and LTG Infra pave the path for enhanced freight flow through Lithuania. The project has also gained momentum thanks to the endorsement from the Ministry of Transport and Communications of the Republic of Lithuania and the Lithuanian Road Administration.
The terminal’s construction is slated to commence in Q1 2024, with operations kickstarting by 2026.
Investor Interest:
Lithuanian and European intermodal terminal operators are expressing avid interest in the Juragiai Intermodal Terminal project. Recently, European transport and warehousing companies have shown heightened enthusiasm towards the terminal’s development. A conclusive decision regarding investors and developers is anticipated shortly.
