New opportunity for delivering containers from Austria and Switzerland to major European ports
ÖBB Rail Cargo Group in a partnership with Swissterminal has commenced a new intermodal connection between western Austria and eastern Switzerland. Besides the direct link between Wolfurt and Frenkendorf, it also provides attractive onward connections to major European ports including Rotterdam, Antwerp and others. The new service will strengthen the significance of the Frenkendorf intermodal terminal, operated by Swissterminal, as a hub for handling maritime cargo in 20- and 40-foot containers.
The new service offers three weekly round trips with a departure on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays from Wolfurt in Austria and on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays from Frenkendorf in Switzerland. Since the Swissterminal Hub Frenkendorf has a well-developed network of container trains, which run by Rail Cargo Group (RCG), the new service provides a range of frequent, flexible connections to the two largest North Sea ports of Rotterdam and Antwerp as well as to the southern ports of Genoa and La Spezia, both in Italy, and to Neuss in Germany. RCG will still offer the TransFER Wolfurt-Rotterdam as a direct connection several times a week.
Wolfurt options
“The introduction of this service makes the Wolfurt rail freight terminal an even more attractive option for the strong export markets in the Vorarlberg area and eastern Switzerland. Through added access to Swissterminal’s network as well as to our partner DP World’s network, customers will benefit from numerous onward transportation options to the north and south of Europe,” said Roman Mayer, CEO Swissterminal. Destinations include the ports of Bremerhaven and Hamburg, the Adriatic ports of Koper and Trieste and several other locations.
