Russian Railways (RZD) has set a historic milestone in moving containers on the New Silk Road. For the first time, the transit traffic between China and Europe via Russia reached a level of 1 million TEU. The landmark boxes were transported within the Chongqing-Helsinki connection, which was arranged by RZD Logistics.

The freight train with the millionth transit container from China arrived at the Vuosaari station in Helsinki, the capital of Finland on Monday, 13 December. On its way between the termini, it ran via Kazakhstan and Russia. Since Finland and Russia have almost similar track gauges (1,524 and 1,520 millimetres), the transhipment took place only at the Dostyk station, on the border between China and Kazakhstan. The containers, which have been moved from Chongqing to Helsinki, were loaded with consumer goods, car parts, retail equipment and other items.

“We have significantly exceeded our plan for the current year, 850,000 containers, and we plan to reach 1.1 million TEU by the year’s end,” said Oleg Belozerov, CEO of Russian Railways. In the coming years, the container transit traffic on the Russian railway network will continue to grow. By 2024, RZD expects to move 1.7 million TEU of transit boxes from China to Europe annually.
