Austria became more rail-connected with Italy’s Port of Trieste since Rail Cargo Group added a new wagonload service to its network. The new direct Villach–Trieste link is dedicated to moving various types of freight including containers and ro-ro units.

The new direct link between Villach and Trieste has been in operation for a month, since 10 September. To be more precise, it links Terminal Villach Süd, an important intermodal facility near the Italian and Slovenian borders, with the multifunctional terminal Trieste Servola (Piattaforma Logistica di Trieste) in the Port of Trieste.

“For the first time, we can now offer direct wagonload transports via the new railway siding to and from the multifunctional terminal at the Port of Trieste as needed,” RCG stated. The new railway siding guarantees the eco-friendly transport of wagonloads, especially for wood, steel, aluminium and other non-ferrous metals as well as containers and ro-ro units.

TransFER to Port of Trieste

By launching the new Villach–Trieste connection, the Austrian rail freight operator is moving further in developing its TransFER service, a network of dedicated wagonload routes. According to RCG, the new link offers four main benefits: a transit time of one day between Villach and Trieste; the company’s own traction for the entire route; end-to-end logistics solutions from a single source; sustainable conventional freight transport. From Villach, freight could be delivered to many destinations in Austria, Europe and even in China.
