ÖBB-Infrastruktur, the infrastructure division of Austrian Federal Railways, intends to increase the performance of its intermodal terminals. To this end, three reloading facilities will be equipped with digital gateways from Camco Technologies. The innovative solution enables remote visual inspection and automatic identification of containers and wagons.

Belgian-based engineering company Camco Technologies was awarded a contract from ÖBB Infrastruktur. Within the deal, it will supply its Rail OCR Portal solution to three intermodal terminals in Austria, namely at the stations of Vienna South (Wien Südbahnhof), Wolfurt and Wels. The new installations will speed up the operations at the mentioned facilities, especially in the rush hours.

Rail OCR Portal

Camco’s Rail OCR Portal solution is based on optical character recognition systems (OCR). Its main components are video cameras and various sensors mounted left, right and top side of the gateway. When a container train runs via the portal, the system scans and recognises the numbers of containers or semi-trailers. All the data is processed with artificial intelligence. Therefore, the Rail OCR Portal solution simplifies the entry and exit processes for containers and semi-trailers at the terminals and reduces processing time to handle a freight train.
