Record monthly container traffic in Port of Koper
Slovenian port of Koper has set a new monthly record for container traffic. To maintain this pace, Luka Koper, a port operator, is planning to extend the quayside of the container terminal.
March once again became a record month for Port of Koper, a Slovenian single maritime facility. The local container terminal transhipped 97,101 TEU. This result surpassed the previous monthly record, which was set three years ago, in March 2018. At that time, Port of Koper handled slightly more than 92,300 TEU. “This is an important milestone, especially in the light of the consequences of the pandemic and the current global situation in the logistics sector,” Dimitrij Zadel, the Management Board President of Luka Koper, said in his congratulatory remarks on the achievement.
Planned improvement
Luka Koper is implementing the investment project dedicated to improving the infrastructure of the container terminal. To this end, the extension of the terminal quayside and the new storage areas will be constructed. The extended quayside will be launched in June. “It is the most important infrastructure project in the Port of Koper within the last ten years, both from a financial as well as a strategic point of view. It will increase the terminal’s annual capacity up to 1.3 million TEU, and up to 1.5 million TEU with additional improvements in the operational area,” Metod Podkrižnik, Management Board Member of Luka Koper, added.
